This extended article takes as its subject the nature of Highland Scottish battles and the use and effectiveness of the arms which the Highlanders most often deployed in those struggles. The place of the broadsword and the targe and their ability to be used successfully in the age of the musket are of particular interest to the author, and these are examined in considerable detail. The questions of how the Highlanders handled musket attacks and what role the bayonet played in hand-to-hand combat are key tactical elements discussed throughout. The article ranges over several centuries and examines in detail the major battles in which Highlanders participated up to and including Culloden in 1746.
