Borders

Borders

There was no precise "border" between England and Scotland before 1603, and those who lived along it knew how to move back and forth across it to their advantage. Border reiver families fought each other and struggled against English and Scottish armies, constantly seeking to evade tax collectors and border administrators. Border ballads tell the stories of such great families as the Armstrongs, Bells, Grahams, and other reiver families.
