Border Castles and Homes

Border warfare was constant but varied. There were huge feudal castles which sought to protect Scotland from English armies, as well as smaller tower fortifications which gave quick refuge from small posses and raiding parties. Older Celtic fortifications interacted and coexisted alongside great feudal structures. After 1603, pacification and unification brought windowed mansions reflecting a less violent age.
