Illuminated Manuscripts
The Celtic Christian message was spread by missionaries and was settled in monasteries which lacked a full body of Christian literature. The need to preserve this sparse canon led to the illuminated manuscripts of Iona, Kells, and Darrow. The illuminations assisted the monk readers to understand the texts they were attempting to read to the pious but illiterate monks.
