Christianity in Scotland

Christianity in Scotland

Christianity in Scotland dates from at least the 3rd or 4th century, or roughly 1700 years ago. Celtic Christianity would come into Scotland with the Scoti, a Celtic tribe from the north of Ireland, and in Scotland it created a primitive evanglical brand or version of the region, drawing upon early Christian ideas, institutions, and writings from the 1st-3rd centuries. Later, orthodox Roman Catholicism would come into Scotland from the continent through England, and the two versions of Christianity would struggle for supremacy until at least the 7th century. Thereafter, the more vigorous and better organized Roman Catholicism reigned supreme in Scotland until the Reformation of the 16th century, when the nation fragmented into Catholicism, Episcopacy, and Presbyterianism. Today, all three versions of the religion are present and active in Scotland.
