Roman Catholicism

Roman Catholicism

Roman Catholicism was the great reformed version of Christianity which swept into the British Isles, challenging Celtic Christianity and halting its spread by the 7th century. By the 11th century, monastic and papal reforms entered both England and Scotland, but by the 16th century (1500-1600), Roman Catholicism in Scotland had become wealthy and ripe for challenge. Calvinism and the Church of England both would find ready converts in the east and south of Scotland, while the west -- particularly the Highlands and Islands -- long after remained Catholic.
