Clothing and Costume
In the 21st century, Scotland often is defined at least in part by the kilt, tartan, the sporran, the sgian dhubh, the bonnet, and other parts of the clothing worn in fact or theory by the "true Scot." The evolution of this clothing provides a complex cultural history, drawing upon Celtic weaving and dyeing, the Highland kilt, the Norse-Viking sporran and penannular brooch, the military uniform of the 19th century, and the later imagination of the inventive Scots themselves. But after 1745 and Culloden, much of this national costume was for some years outlawed in the name of the United Kingdom and a subjugated Scotland.
