Covenanters
Those Presbyterians in Scotland who strongly held to strict Calvinist principles united through a covenant, or solemn oath and proclamation, to fight for the conversion of all of Britain to their religious beliefs. They defied the government in Scotland, which supported Episcopacy, and they vigorously attacked Roman Catholicism and any other interpretation of Christianity which survived in Scotland. From the 1630s through at least the 1690s, they were relentless in their drive to convert Britain by persuasion or force.
