Family Names
Generally speaking, families began to be described by name as society became larger and more complex. Earlier individuals most often were described by character, color, conduct, or occupation, as with John the Ironsmith or John Redbeard. By the 19th century, family names had become common over much of Scotland, but the spelling of the name varied -- and still varies -- enormously.
