Names by Origin
Family names could be taken from the location of properties held by the family or from descriptions of places held by the family, or from the origin of the family. They could come from occupation, while others might be particular to a region. Those whom we today call "Scots" have a rich and varied background, with families and names coming into Scotland from a wide variety of directions.
