Personal Names
Personal or first names precede a family name. These can be descriptive, additional family names, or even nicknames. By the late 19th century, in the more complex and populous centers of Scotland, a child might be given two or more personal names before the family name, as a means of identifying which particular individual was meant. Today, we call these middle names.
