The Scottish Highlanders first came to Georgia as part of the establishment of a colony authorized on 9 June 1732. James Oglethorpe, an English general and philanthropist, instituted the colony as a means of resettling debtors and others in the Americas. The first settlement was New Inverness, now called Darien, in McIntosh County. This is a history of that settlement, those who came over, the ongoing war with Spain for possession of the region, and the final state of the colony by the time of the American Revolution.
