Highland Families
From Inverness-shire and the Hebridean islands through Argyllshire and below, long-established families of Celtic or Norse origin struggled to survive brutal local feuds among families and for or against the Edinburgh monarchy. Many of these families included "Irish" ancestors or cadet lines, and no firm distinction ought to be made between "Scottish" and "Irish" families with the same name. And since it was a verbal society, variations within the name can assume no importance. The old myths about "Mac" and "Mc" should best be ignored.
