Highland Folklore and Customs
The Highlands and Islands could claim a Celtic-Norse culture which stretched back for hundreds of years and which united the region with much of Ireland. Folk heroes most often were Celtic or Norse, not Scottish or Irish, and folk customs and beliefs carried a pre-Celtic character well into the Christian era. The past provided material for family pride and honor, and history mattered less than family reputation or a good tale well told. Earlier earth-based religions combined and also clashed with Christian traditions, and faeries, kelpies, and saints all were interwoven into a rich folk culture filled with mysteries and miracles.
