Carmina Gadelica: Hymns, Charms and Lore of the Western Highlands and Islands (hitherto unpublished) from the Collections of the late Alexander Carmichael, LL.D.
By J. Carmichael Watson.
25 pages. Downloadable pdf.
Alexander Carmichael's life's work was the collecting and recording of the hymns, prayers, charms, and lore of the Gaelic-speaking Western Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The vast majority of his collections were published in the legendary Carmina Gadelica, a five-volume work that remains one of the most important works in Gaelic. This article from the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness presents a variety of pieces which were, for one reason or another, not included in the larger work. They are published in both Gaelic and English and may be divided into the following categories: 1) Lore connected with the moon and sun; 2) Lore connected with birth and death; 3) Ceremonies connected with family partings; 4) The Auspicious Day; 5) Cure for sickness; 6) Tune of Hospitality; and 7) Various prayers, runes, and invocations.
