History

The history of Scotland is a complex one which stretches far back into the Celtic world of tribes, but which also includes Roman intrusions, Celtic Christian evangelical missionaries, Anglo-Saxon settlements, Norse-Viking invasions, and fierce English aggression. Only gradually would a monarchy in the southeast emerge, and between 1200 and 1600 extend itself into the west and north. Only after 1603 would Scotland feel the full impact of English ideas. 1707 and union would put an end to Scottish independence, but there would still be deep regional differences, and it would only be after 1820 that Scotland would revel in its differences and seek once again to identify itself as an independent culture.
