History, 1688-1800

This period saw the triumph of Presbyterianism and of the Campbells, the unfortunate Darien colonial experience, union with England in 1707, and a succession of uprisings seeking to restore the exiled Stuarts. 1708, 1715, and 1745-46 all brought tension, warfare, and repression to geographical regions of Scotland. But by 1800, the worst was over; Clydeside was industrializing; and Highland culture was slipping away.
