Culloden and Its Aftermath
Culloden Moor in the spring of 1746 ended all hope for a Stuart restoration. Those families who had supported the Jacobite cause suffered confiscation of lands, arrest, and political isolation. Highland culture was fiercely attacked by the Hanoverian government, even though there were many chiefs in that region who were loyal or neutral. The kilt, tartan, weapons, and land rights unique to the Highlands were revoked or prohibited.
