Roman Britain

Roman Britain

Overall, Britain prospered between 800 BC and 100 AD, and that very success attracted outside attention. The Celts were inventive farmers and traders, using intensive farming, mining, and crafting of a wide variety of goods. Julius Caesar's Rome needed productive lands to farm in order to feed the imperial cities, and by 100 AD Rome had completed the conquest of all of England and some of modern Scotland. This they held until around 400 AD (1600 years ago), when they abandoned Britain and drew back to the more productive lands of the Mediterranean. They never held Ireland, nor all of Scotland, but there is a Roman part of Scottish history.
