Iceland
Between 800 and 1200, Iceland was easily reachable by Viking ships sailing westward from Orkney and Shetland. It was settled by Norse families seeking rich farmlands, and during these centuries it was midway between North America and Scandinavia. After 1300, worsening weather increasingly isolated this thinly settled island.
